Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), a retrovirus, is a common infection of cats. It is the leading cause of virus-associated deaths in cats. It spreads through the saliva, nasal secretions, feces, urine, and milk of infected cats. Infected cats may suffer from anemia, immune suppression, and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blood tests are available to test your cat for FeLV. It is recommended for any new cat to be screened for FeLV infection before entering a household, as well as any cat showing clinical signs of FeLV or sharing a household with a FeLV-infected cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is no treatment to eliminate the FeLV virus from the body, and the disease is ultimately fatal. Therefore, preventing FeLV infection through vaccination is highly recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All kittens should be vaccinated at their initial round of vaccines. This is then boosted yearly to maintain immunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Onset of immunity is 2 to 3 weeks after primary vaccination depending on the product. When a cat is vaccinated against FeLV for the first time, owners should be instructed to confine the cat until at least 2 weeks after the final vaccination to ensure that an adequate immune response has developed before risk of exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
FeLV vaccine is safe, and there is no risk of the vaccine causing FeLV. Vaccine reactions are rare in cats. However, any vaccine can cause transient, mild side effects for a few days after vaccination, such as lethargy and low appetite.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
