Day 3 - Early morning we board the flight to Aurangabad, a city named after Aurangzeb, the last mighty Mughal ruler. Aurangabad is known for art and craft, particularly silk and has many markets selling a variety of local handicrafts, exotic gems, shawls, and the region's famous Paithani silk saris. Upon arrival we check-in at the hotel. Later we drive around 35 km to visit the Ellora Caves that house a total of 34 caves with sculptures and paintings depicting not one, but three different religions-Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Day 4 - After breakfast we drive for a couple of hours north to visit the Ajanta Caves. Ajanta is one of India's treasured historical and architectural wonder. It was found during the 19th century by a group of British officers on a tiger hunt and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ajanta caves, nestled deep beneath the Sahyadri hills above Waghora, portray the story of Buddhism that was prevalent here from 200 BCE to 650 CE. The amazing cave temples of Ajanta are carved into the rocky sides of a dramatic crescent-shaped gorge, at the head of which is a waterfall that drops over the mountain rim in a series of seven steps to a pool far below — deep inside the mountain lie the Buddhist chaitya – vihara prayer and monastery caves. After sightseeing we head back to the hotel for an overnight stay.
